HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda.

The five Sierra Gorda missions retain their original eighteenth-century church buildings, notable for elaborately carved polychrome baroque facades blending European and indigenous decorative motifs, with the mission at Jalpan de Serra among the best preserved. They are protected by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia and are inscribed together as a World Heritage Site. The churches remain active places of worship that are also open to visitors.

About Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda

Franciscan missionaries, most notably Junípero Serra, founded this mission and four others in the Sierra Gorda mountains during the mid-eighteenth century to evangelize local indigenous communities. Each combined a church with a distinctive polychrome facade and buildings for teaching and agriculture. The missions represented a phase of Spanish evangelization preceding Serra's later California missions.
