The Torre del Homenaje keep and the surrounding stone walls and bastions of the fortress survive, forming one of the oldest European military structures in the Americas. It lies within the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, a World Heritage Site, and is managed by the Dominican Ministry of Culture. The fortress is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Fortaleza Ozama

Fortaleza Ozama was built by Spanish colonial authorities in the early sixteenth century to defend the mouth of the Ozama River at Santo Domingo. It is considered among the oldest European military structures in the Americas. It later served as a garrison and prison, reflecting Santo Domingo's role as the seat of Spanish power in the Caribbean.
