HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fortaleza General Artigas (Cerro Fortress).

The Cerro Fortress preserves its star shaped stone ramparts, bastions, moat, and the lighthouse standing within its walls atop the Cerro de Montevideo, overlooking the bay and port of Montevideo. It is administered by Uruguay's armed forces and houses the Museo Militar, or Military Museum. The fortress and museum are open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Fortaleza General Artigas (Cerro Fortress)

The Cerro Fortress was built in the early nineteenth century under Spanish colonial rule atop the hill overlooking Montevideo's harbor. It was designed to defend the port and the approaches to the Rio de la Plata from naval attack. The fort later took the name of independence leader Jose Artigas and became a symbol of the nation's coastal defenses.
