HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fortaleza d'Amura.

The fort preserves its bastioned stone perimeter walls and gate, built by Portuguese colonial authorities to defend the harbor at Bissau, though its interior buildings have seen considerable alteration. It remains in the ownership of the Guinea-Bissau state and has historically been used for military and administrative purposes. Public access is limited and largely restricted to the exterior walls and grounds.

About Fortaleza d'Amura

Fortaleza d'Amura was built by Portuguese colonial forces in Bissau to defend their trading interests along the Guinea coast, with construction dated variously to the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries. It served as a center of Portuguese military and administrative control over the town for an extended period. The fort anchored Portugal's colonial presence in West Africa.
