The star-shaped fort retains its seventeenth century brick walls, bastions, and several colonial-era buildings within its grounds, now housing a museum collection. It stands within the Historic Inner City of Paramaribo, a World Heritage Site, and is maintained in state ownership. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis as a museum.
About Fort Zeelandia
Fort Zeelandia was built in the seventeenth century, initially by the French and later rebuilt by the English, before Dutch forces took Suriname and expanded it. It served as the principal defense work protecting the settlement of Paramaribo on the Suriname River. The fort also functioned as the administrative center of the Dutch colonial government in Suriname.
