Built by the Proprietary
forces January 1771. Captured
by the Connecticut settlers the
same year, and used as a defence against
the Indians. Rebuilt in 1778 and became
an important military post during
the Revolutionary War.
About Fort Wyoming Marker
Fort Wyoming was rebuilt in 1778 as the Revolution brought frontier warfare to the Wyoming Valley. It sheltered inhabitants during the crisis surrounding the Battle of Wyoming and later served as a mobilization point for Major General John Sullivan’s 1779 expedition against British-allied Haudenosaunee communities. The fort supported Patriot defense and operations along Pennsylvania’s contested northern frontier.
