HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort William.
Fort William preserves its stone curtain walls, bastions, and gateway overlooking the sea, though many interior buildings have been altered or lost over time. It is one of the forts and castles of the Volta, Greater Accra, Central, and Western Regions World Heritage Site, and is managed by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board. It remains open to visitors on a ticketed basis, with access to the ramparts and courtyard generally permitted.
About Fort William
Fort William was built by the British at Anomabu on Ghana's Gold Coast, completed in the 1760s on the site of an earlier trading post, to protect English merchants and project power along the coast. It served as a major depot in the Atlantic slave trade, holding captives before their shipment overseas. It later functioned as a colonial prison.
