The fort survives largely as rebuilt in the nineteenth century atop earlier seventeenth century foundations, retaining its keep, ramparts, moat, tunnels, and gun emplacements with replica cannon. It is a Bermuda government owned national monument managed as part of the island's parks system. The fort operates as a museum site open to visitors on a ticketed basis.
About Fort St. Catherine
English settlers built the first Fort St. Catherine in 1614 to defend the northeastern approach to Bermuda and the town of St. George's. It was rebuilt and enlarged repeatedly over the following centuries as artillery technology advanced, eventually mounting heavy coastal guns. The fort formed part of Bermuda's chain of defenses protecting the colony's harbor and shipping.
