About Fortaleza de la Inmaculada Concepción / Fort San Juan
The Fortress of the Immaculate Conception, also known as Fort San Juan, guarded the San Juan River in Nicaragua. British forces captured it during an expedition in 1780 in which Horatio Nelson took part. The stronghold connected river defense with imperial ambitions across Central America.
The surviving fortress at El Castillo is a heritage destination with a history extending beyond the 1780 expedition. Individual surviving features require dating before they can be identified specifically with the British attack.
History happened here at Fortaleza de la Inmaculada Concepción / Fort San Juan
Britain's 1780 expedition sought control of the San Juan River route. Nelson assisted the operation that captured the Spanish fortress, but disease devastated the expedition. The campaign failed to produce lasting British control despite the temporary military success.
A contemporary portrait of Nelson later reflected the effects of illness and included the fortress in its background. The surviving stronghold and documentary evidence connect the episode to a larger contest over Caribbean and Central American routes. Its earlier construction and later history remain important parts of the site's identity.
