HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Saint-Louis.

The site preserves a star shaped stone fortification with bastions and ramparts built up over the seventeenth and later centuries, much of it still in military use rather than left as a pure ruin. It remains the property of the French state under the Ministry of Defense and carries historic monument protection. Public access is limited to guided tours.

About Fort Saint-Louis

French colonists began fortifying the harbor point at what became Fort-de-France in the 1630s, under Governor Jacques Dyel du Parquet, to defend Martinique's main port. Known later as Fort Saint-Louis, it anchored French naval power in the Caribbean and helped repel English and Dutch attacks. The fortress secured France's key base in the Lesser Antilles.
