About Fort Saint-Jean National Historic Site and Museum

Fort Saint-Jean guarded the Richelieu River route between the St. Lawrence region and Lake Champlain. Its rebuilt defenses resisted Richard Montgomery’s American siege in 1775. Archaeological remains and a museum on the Royal Military College Saint-Jean campus interpret successive French and British military uses.

Foundations, stockade traces, and rampart remains survive from successive fortifications. A museum interprets the military property within an active college campus, whose access arrangements apply to visitors.

History happened here at Fort Saint-Jean National Historic Site and Museum

Fortifications at Saint-Jean developed over successive French and British periods. The French built a fort in 1748 to protect the Richelieu corridor. It was destroyed in 1760 and rebuilt under Governor Carleton in 1775 as the American invasion threatened the route toward Montréal.

Richard Montgomery’s forces conducted a prolonged siege in 1775 before the garrison surrendered. The post’s river position made it an obstacle to the invasion and a gathering point for military movement toward Lake Champlain. Later redoubts and campus development added new layers. Surviving archaeological remains preserve evidence of several phases, while Benedict Arnold’s earlier raid and its precise landing point require separate geographic documentation.
