HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort São Jago.
The fort preserves its hilltop bastions, curtain walls, and gateway overlooking Elmina and the neighboring Elmina Castle below, largely intact from its Dutch era construction. It is managed by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and forms part of a World Heritage Site covering Ghana's forts and castles. The fort is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Fort São Jago
Fort São Jago was built by the Dutch West India Company in 1652 on the hill above Elmina to defend Elmina Castle from land attack. It reinforced Dutch control of the Gold Coast trading system, which included the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans. The fort remained part of Dutch coastal defenses on the Gold Coast into the nineteenth century.
