HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Orange.
The stone Dutch fort survives with its curtain walls and bastions largely intact, having been restored and adapted for later use as a lighthouse station. It forms part of the Forts and Castles of Ghana World Heritage Site and is managed by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board. The fort is open to visitors, generally by guided tour.
About Fort Orange
Fort Orange was built by the Dutch West India Company in the mid-seventeenth century at Sekondi on the Gold Coast to secure trade in gold and, later, enslaved people. It changed hands among European powers contesting the trade before passing to British control in the nineteenth century. The fort exemplifies the coastal strongholds that structured commerce in West Africa.
