HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort O'Brien State Historic Site.

Maine preserves earthworks and archaeological remnants from successive forts at this state historic site overlooking Machias Bay. Interpretive signs, monuments, paths, and open grounds mark the defenses, although British destruction and later rebuilding left no complete Revolutionary-era fort standing.

About Fort O'Brien State Historic Site

Also known as Fort Machias, this earthwork fortification was built to defend the town following the 1775 Battle of Machias and saw action during the Revolutionary War before being destroyed and rebuilt multiple times.
