HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Motte Site.

The plantation house used as Fort Motte was burned during the 1781 siege and no longer survives. The privately owned rural landscape retains archaeological potential and commemorative markers, but modern agriculture and later development have altered the battlefield and generally limit public access.

About Fort Motte Site

In May 1781, Patriot forces under Francis Marion and Henry Lee besieged and captured this British supply post by setting fire to the plantation house serving as its stronghold, part of the campaign to reclaim the South Carolina backcountry.
