HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort King George Historic Site.
The site preserves a reconstructed timber blockhouse, palisade, and earthworks on the footprint of the original eighteenth century British fort, along with tabby ruins from a later era, though none of the original wooden fort fabric survives above ground. It is a Georgia state historic site managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Fort King George Historic Site
British colonial authorities built Fort King George in 1721 near the mouth of the Altamaha River as the southernmost outpost of British North America. A garrison of the Independent Company of South Carolina held its blockhouse for several years before abandoning the post in the 1730s. The fort helped defend the frontier between British Georgia and Spanish Florida.
