About Fort Johnston

Fort Johnston guarded the Cape Fear River and the port of Brunswick before the Revolution. In July 1775, local Patriots burned the fort after its royal commander fled, denying the colonial government a fortified base. The destruction marked the collapse of royal authority in the region and demonstrated the growing power of North Carolina’s revolutionary movement.
