HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort James.

Fort James retains portions of its stone ramparts and battery walls along with a row of cannon overlooking the entrance to St. John's Harbour, though much of the original structure has eroded or been lost. It is maintained by the Antiguan government, in the care of the National Parks Authority. The site lies in open ground and is freely accessible to visitors.

About Fort James

The British built Fort James in the early eighteenth century to guard the entrance to St. John's Harbour, the main port of their sugar colony of Antigua. It formed part of a chain of coastal fortifications designed to protect the island from French naval attack. The fort helped secure Antigua's role as a key Caribbean naval and trading base.
