About Fort Grierson Site (Augusta)
Fort Grierson was a secondary British stronghold in Augusta during the occupation of 1780–1781. Its capture preceded the surrender of Fort Cornwallis in the 1781 siege. A historical marker near Eleventh and Reynolds Streets identifies the fort’s approximate location in the modern city.
The marker beside Fire Station No. 3 provides a commemorative reference near the approximate fort site. It does not define an archaeological boundary or preserve an intact fortified building.
History happened here at Fort Grierson Site (Augusta)
British officer James Grierson commanded a temporary Augusta stronghold during the occupation under Thomas Brown. In 1781, American forces associated with Andrew Pickens, Elijah Clarke, and Henry Lee invested the position. Grierson attempted to withdraw his men along the river toward Fort Cornwallis after the fort came under attack.
The historical marker records that few escaped and that Grierson was captured and killed while a prisoner. His post’s fall formed one stage of the siege of Augusta, rather than the final surrender of its principal fort. The marker’s approximate-location wording is important to the site’s interpretation. Its mistaken expansion of Light Horse Harry Lee’s name should not be repeated: the commander was Henry Lee, not Richard Henry Lee.
