The fort's masonry ramparts, bastions, and main building, originally constructed by the Danish colonial government, survive in restored form. It is owned by the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands and operated as a historic site and museum. It is open to the public, generally on a ticketed basis.
About Fort Frederik
Danish colonial authorities built Fort Frederik at Frederiksted on St. Croix in the 1750s to defend the island's sugar plantation economy. The fort garrisoned troops and helped enforce the colonial trade and slavery that sustained the island. In 1848, enslaved people gathered near the fort during the uprising that forced the governor to proclaim emancipation.
