HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Foster Site (The Rim).

The Rim preserves overgrown remnants of Fort Foster’s earthen breastworks within a nationally recognized historic landscape. No original buildings survive, and vegetation obscures portions of the defenses, while local preservation initiatives and planned reconstruction seek to improve interpretation of the 1777 battle site.

This earthwork fortification overlooking the confluence of the Machias and East Machias Rivers was built in 1776 and attacked by British forces during the 1777 Battle of Machias. It anchors the documented history to a location that can still be identified.
