Fort Forman was a frontier refuge associated with Captain William Foreman and Hampshire County militia. In 1777 Foreman led a relief company toward Fort Henry at Wheeling after reports of attack. Near the Narrows south of present Moundsville, Native warriors ambushed the column, killing Foreman, two of his sons, and many others. The disaster became known as Foreman's Defeat. The episode illustrates the western Revolutionary War, where American settlement expansion, British alliances, Native resistance, and thinly defended forts produced a conflict distinct from the campaigns along the Atlantic seaboard.
