HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Duvernette.
The small hilltop fortification retains its stone walls, cannon emplacements, and cisterns on the rocky islet known as Young Island Rock, reached by a steep stairway. It is maintained by the government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines as a historic site. Access is by boat from the mainland, and the fort's grounds are open to visitors.
About Fort Duvernette
Fort Duvernette was built by the British in the eighteenth century on a small rocky islet off Saint Vincent to defend the anchorage at Calliaqua Bay. Cannons were hauled up its steep sides and mounted to cover approaches by sea. The fort formed part of the wider British coastal defense network protecting the island's colonial settlements.
