About Fort Dreadnought Site (Fort Galphin)
Fort Dreadnought, also called Fort Galphin, occupied the Silver Bluff trading landscape in South Carolina. George Galphin’s commercial complex became a fortified Revolutionary post and was captured in May 1781. The surrounding land is managed by Audubon, while the archaeological fort location remains separate from the visitor center.
Silver Bluff is a registered archaeological landscape with a restricted site address. Audubon preserves and interprets the surrounding natural and historical property. The mapped William Bartram marker commemorates his visit to the trading landscape.
History happened here at Fort Dreadnought Site (Fort Galphin)
George Galphin’s Silver Bluff trading post connected colonial commerce with Indigenous communities in the Savannah River region. During the Revolution, the complex became a fortified position known as Fort Galphin or Fort Dreadnought. Its capture in May 1781 belongs to the campaign against British-held posts around Augusta.
The property’s history extends beyond the military episode. Silver Bluff was also associated with an early African American Baptist congregation and with people whose labor shaped the surrounding landscape. Later conservation brought the land under Audubon stewardship. The trading post, fort, church history, and ecological restoration are related layers of the property, while a public visitor center or nearby marker should not be mistaken for the fort’s surveyed location.
