About Fort Clinton Site (Hudson Highlands)

Fort Clinton occupied the south side of Popolopen Creek in the Hudson Highlands. It worked with Fort Montgomery to defend the river and fell during the British assault of October 6, 1777. Surviving remains and interpretation lie within Bear Mountain State Park’s Trailside area.

The fort survives through archaeological remains and interpreted terrain rather than intact military buildings. The mapped Outer Redoubt sign is associated with surviving defensive features. Trailside’s museums and paths provide the visitor setting.

History happened here at Fort Clinton Site (Hudson Highlands)

Fort Clinton formed the southern element of the paired defenses at Popolopen Creek. Fort Montgomery stood to the north. Together, these American posts sought to obstruct British movement along the Hudson River, whose control was central to the campaign in New York.

British, Loyalist, and Hessian troops attacked the two forts on October 6, 1777. After capturing the defenses, they damaged the military works and river barriers. The present Trailside landscape preserves fragments of Fort Clinton within a much later park setting. Reading its redoubt remains alongside the Fort Montgomery interpretation helps explain the scale of the original defensive system without treating the two positions as a single building or battlefield point.
