About Fort Christian
Fort Christian was built by the Danish West India and Guinea Company beginning in 1672 to defend Charlotte Amalie harbor on Saint Thomas. Named for King Christian V of Denmark, it later housed the colonial governor's residence, a courthouse, and a jail. For nearly two centuries it anchored Danish administration of the island and its Caribbean trade.
