HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Charlotte Site (South Carolina).

The stone ruins of Fort Charlotte lie submerged beneath J. Strom Thurmond Lake after salvage work preceded reservoir construction. A modern overlook, etched memorial, historical marker, and interpretive signs commemorate the fort and its 1775 capture, but the original site is inaccessible underwater.

About Fort Charlotte Site (South Carolina)

Captured by South Carolina Patriots in July 1775, this former British fort on the Savannah River was the first British military post seized by Patriot forces in the Revolutionary War. It anchors the documented history to a location that can still be identified.
