About Fort Charles
British colonial authorities built Fort Charles on Nevis in the late seventeenth century to defend the harbor at Charlestown and the island's sugar plantations. Its cannons guarded the harbor approach during conflicts between Britain and France in the region. The fort formed part of a chain of coastal defenses protecting Nevis's colonial trade.
