HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Burt.
The remains of Fort Burt survive as ruined stone walls and foundations, among the oldest such fortification remnants in Road Town, standing on a hillside now partly incorporated into a hotel property. The site falls under the general heritage protection of the British Virgin Islands government. It is accessible to visitors informally as part of the surrounding grounds rather than as a formally staffed monument.
About Fort Burt
Fort Burt was built on a hill above Road Harbour in Tortola, with origins attributed to a seventeenth century Dutch fortification later rebuilt by the British. It helped defend Road Town and the harbor from attack during the colonial period. The fort formed part of a wider system of British coastal defenses in the Virgin Islands.
