HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Bullen.
The fort preserves its nineteenth-century stone ramparts, gun emplacements, and cannon overlooking the mouth of the Gambia River, standing largely intact with some restoration. It is administered by the National Centre for Arts and Culture of the Gambia and forms part of a World Heritage Site shared with related river sites. The fort is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Fort Bullen
Fort Bullen was built by the British in the 1820s at the mouth of the Gambia River to enforce the suppression of the Atlantic slave trade after Britain's 1807 abolition. Positioned opposite Fort James on Banjul Point, it worked with allied defenses to intercept slave ships along the coast. It formed part of Britain's campaign against West African slave trafficking.
