HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Berkeley.
Fort Berkeley survives as a ruin, with sections of its stone and earthwork batteries, magazine, and gun emplacements remaining above ground at the entrance to English Harbour. It lies within Nelson's Dockyard National Park, part of a World Heritage Site, and is managed by the National Parks Authority of Antigua and Barbuda. The ruins stand in open ground and are freely accessible on foot.
About Fort Berkeley
British colonial forces built Fort Berkeley in the early eighteenth century to guard the entrance to English Harbour, one of the Royal Navy's key Caribbean bases. Its gun batteries commanded the narrow channel leading to the dockyard where warships were careened and repaired. The fort helped protect Antigua's harbor and shipping from rival naval threats.
