HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Barton.
Tiverton preserves Fort Barton’s surviving Revolutionary earthworks within a wooded public park and nature area. Trails, interpretive signs, an observation tower, and protected open space provide access to the hilltop defenses, although erosion, vegetation, and later use have softened the original military features.
About Fort Barton
This American Revolutionary War fortification overlooking the Sakonnet River supported the 1778 campaign to retake British-occupied Aquidneck Island, and its remains, including an observation tower, are preserved today. It anchors the documented history to a location that can still be identified.
