HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Apollonia.
The fort's stone ramparts, courtyard, and main building survive, having undergone restoration in the twentieth century after a period of ruin. It is managed by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and forms part of a World Heritage Site listing shared with other forts and castles along the Ghanaian coast. The fort is open to the public, generally through a resident caretaker or guide.
About Fort Apollonia
Fort Apollonia was built by the British in the 1760s and 1770s at Beyin on the Gold Coast to secure trade in gold and ivory with local Nzema communities. Like other European forts along the coast, it also became entangled in the transatlantic slave trade. It served British commercial and strategic interests in the region into the following century.
