About Fort Amsterdam
The Dutch West India Company built Fort Amsterdam in the 1630s as the fortified seat of its colonial government in Willemstad, Curaçao. It defended the harbor and anchored Dutch trade in the Caribbean, including the transatlantic slave trade that made Curaçao a major regional entrepot. The fort complex also housed the governor's residence and a garrison church.
