HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fontevraud Abbey.
The abbey retains its Romanesque church housing the painted recumbent effigies of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, and Isabella of Angoulême, together with the cloisters, chapter house, refectory, and the distinctive octagonal Romanesque kitchen, all substantially original medieval fabric. It is owned by the French state and managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux. The abbey complex is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Fontevraud Abbey
Robert of Arbrissel founded Fontevraud Abbey in 1101 as a double monastery housing monks and nuns under an abbess. The abbey became tied to the Plantagenets and served as the burial place of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their son Richard the Lionheart. It remained an important center of religious life in western France for centuries.
