About First Bank of the US
The First Bank of the United States was chartered in 1791 as part of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton’s program to stabilize the finances of the new nation. Although established after the Revolution, it addressed debts and fiscal weaknesses inherited from the war. The bank’s creation reflected Hamilton’s Revolutionary experience with inadequate military funding and became a major debate over how the Constitution should support the republic won through independence.
