The Roman cisterns beneath Fermo survive as an intact underground network of vaulted chambers built to store water for the ancient hilltop city, with the original masonry largely unaltered and still watertight. The structure lies beneath the historic center and is in the care of the municipality of Fermo. It can be visited only by guided tour arranged through local heritage offices.
About Fermo (Cisterne Romane)
The Roman cisterns beneath Fermo were built in the first century BCE or shortly after to store water for the ancient city of Firmum. Engineers carved a vast network of connected underground chambers into the hillside bedrock, fed by channels and rainfall. The reservoir supplied the Roman colony's public and domestic water needs for centuries.
