About Fenghuang Ancient Town, Fenghuang
Fenghuang grew around a Qing garrison town fortified in the early eighteenth century to control the Miao frontier of western Hunan. Stilt houses along the Tuo River, stone city gates, and nearby sections of the Southern Great Wall reflect this frontier role. The town is also the hometown of the writer Shen Congwen.
