Falmouth retains its grid of Georgian era stone and timber buildings, including the courthouse and Water Square, many restored through local heritage efforts, though some structures remain derelict. The town is protected by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust in cooperation with local preservation organizations and the municipal authority. It remains a living town, freely accessible to visitors on foot.
About Falmouth Historic Town
Falmouth was founded in 1769 as a planned port town in Trelawny Parish, laid out on a grid and named for its founder's English hometown. It grew rapidly as a shipping point for sugar and rum from surrounding plantations and, before abolition, as a port through which enslaved Africans passed. Its Georgian architecture reflected the wealth of plantation agriculture.
