HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fadiouth Shell Island.
The island preserves its distinctive man-made ground of accumulated clam and oyster shells, upon which the village, its footbridge, and the adjoining shell-covered Christian and Muslim cemeteries are built, with no formal ancient monument surviving as ruins. It is not a formally designated heritage site but is maintained as a functioning village by the local community. The island is freely accessible to visitors, generally accompanied by a local guide.
About Fadiouth Shell Island
Fadiouth developed as a Serer fishing village built up over generations on an island formed largely from accumulated shells along Senegal's Petite Côte. Its residents raised the ground with shells and built causeways linking it to the mainland and to a cemetery shared by Muslim and Christian families. It reflected local traditions of fishing and interfaith coexistence.
