The cathedral retains its complete Norman transept towers along with a Decorated Gothic nave, choir, and west front screen of carved figures, all essentially original medieval fabric. It is owned by the Church of England as the seat of the Bishop of Exeter and is a Grade I listed building. It remains an active place of worship that is also open to visitors, with certain areas accessible only during services or guided tours.

Exeter Cathedral grew from a Norman church begun in 1112, largely rebuilt in Decorated Gothic style during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It served from medieval times as the seat of the Bishop of Exeter and a center of worship and pilgrimage in Devon. Its builders created one of the longest unbroken runs of Gothic vaulting in Europe.
