HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ex-Convento de San Agustín, Acolman.

The former Augustinian monastery preserves its fortress-like church, cloister with original mural paintings, and open chapel, standing largely as original sixteenth century fabric. It is under the custody of Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History as a protected historic monument, and forms part of the Earliest Sixteenth-Century Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatépetl World Heritage Site. The complex is open to the public for ticketed visits as a museum.

About Ex-Convento de San Agustín, Acolman

The monastery at Acolman was built by Augustinian friars in the sixteenth century as part of the evangelization of indigenous communities in New Spain. It featured an open atrium, a plateresque facade, and interior murals used to instruct converts in Christian doctrine. It ranked among the earliest Augustinian monasteries established in colonial Mexico.
