The site preserves the eighteenth century Franciscan convent complex largely intact, including its church, cloisters, and choir, along with an extensive collection of colonial-era religious paintings and a historic library housed within. It is administered by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia as a museum. The complex is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Ex-Convento de Guadalupe, Zacatecas

The Ex-Convento de Guadalupe was founded in 1707 by Franciscan friars as a missionary college, one of the Colegios de Propaganda Fide established to train missionaries for the northern frontier of New Spain. Friars trained there went on to found missions across Texas and California. The complex became a major center of Franciscan religious life in colonial Zacatecas.
