HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Escomb Saxon Church, County Durham.
The church retains its original seventh-century fabric almost entirely intact, including a narrow chancel arch and small round-headed windows built largely from reused Roman stone, one block of which bears a carved sundial. It is a Grade I listed building cared for by a local preservation trust in association with the Church of England, and it remains a consecrated place of worship. The church is freely open to visitors for much of the day, with occasional services still held inside.
About Escomb Saxon Church, County Durham
Anglo-Saxon builders raised Escomb Church in County Durham around the seventh century, reusing dressed stone quarried from the nearby abandoned Roman fort of Vinovia. Its tall narrow nave and small round-headed windows reflected an early and simple form of Saxon church design. The church served the small farming community of Escomb for centuries.
