HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Erice Historic Hill Town.

The hilltop town preserves its medieval stone walls and gates, narrow cobbled streets, the Norman Castello di Venere built over the site of an ancient temple, and the Chiesa Madre with its detached bell tower. It is administered by the comune of Erice, with its churches under the local diocese. The town is freely accessible, with the castle and some churches open on a ticketed basis.

About Erice Historic Hill Town

Erice was settled by the ancient Elymian people and later became famous for its sanctuary to a fertility goddess worshipped by Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans as Venus Erycina. In the medieval period the Normans and Aragonese fortified the hill town with castles and walls. Erice served as a strategic stronghold overlooking western Sicily.
