The cathedral preserves its Norman nave, the unique medieval octagon and lantern tower, the Lady Chapel, and much of its original medieval stonework and stained glass, alongside later restorations. It remains the seat of the Church of England's Diocese of Ely and is a Grade I listed building. It functions as an active place of worship and is open to the public, with charges for certain areas.
About Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire
Ely Cathedral originated as a monastery founded by Etheldreda in the seventh century, rebuilt from 1083 under Norman rule and elevated to cathedral status in 1109. Its distinctive octagon tower was built in the fourteenth century after the original central tower collapsed in 1322. The shrine of Etheldreda long made Ely a center of pilgrimage within the English church.
