HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Elizabeth Fort.
Elizabeth Fort retains its star-shaped seventeenth-century bastioned walls and ramparts largely intact, along with later buildings from its use as a military barracks and, subsequently, a prison, though earlier structures within the walls were altered or demolished over time. The fort is owned and managed by Cork City Council. It is open to the public, with access to the ramparts and grounds generally free.
About Elizabeth Fort
English authorities built Elizabeth Fort outside Cork's city walls in 1601 as a star-shaped artillery fort, rebuilding it in stone after Irish forces burned it during a later uprising. It later served as a military barracks and, in the nineteenth century, as a holding prison for women awaiting transportation to Australia. It anchored English control over Cork.
