Elgin Cathedral survives as a roofless ruin, with its twin west towers, chapter house, and sections of the choir and nave walls still standing, earning it the historic name Lantern of the North. It is a scheduled monument in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. The ruins are open to visitors on a ticketed basis.
About Elgin Cathedral
The bishopric of Moray founded Elgin Cathedral in 1224 as its seat, replacing an earlier church at Spynie. Known as the Lantern of the North, it was burned in 1390 by Alexander Stewart, the Wolf of Badenoch, during a dispute with the bishop. It ceased to serve as a cathedral after the Reformation abolished Catholic worship in Scotland.
