HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ek Balam.

The site preserves its Acropolis, a stepped pyramid bearing an unusually well preserved stucco frieze and winged figures framing the so called Mouth of the Monster doorway, together with the Oval Palace, a ballcourt, entrance arches, and the double wall enclosing the site core, all largely original beneath modern consolidation. It is administered by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia as a protected archaeological zone. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis, and visitors may climb the Acropolis.

About Ek Balam

Ek Balam was a Maya city in the northern Yucatán that flourished as a regional capital during the Late Classic period, roughly the seventh through tenth centuries. Its ruler Ukit Kan Lek Tok was buried within the Acropolis behind an elaborately stuccoed facade depicting a monster's jaws. The city controlled trade routes and tribute across the surrounding lowlands.
