HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Dungiven Priory.
The ruined Augustinian priory preserves its roofless nave and chancel, including the carved O'Cahan family tomb effigy, along with fragmentary remains of the associated monastic buildings. It is a state care historic monument maintained by the Department for Communities' Historic Environment Division in Northern Ireland. The ruins stand in open ground and are freely accessible to visitors at all times.
About Dungiven Priory
Dungiven Priory was founded in the twelfth century as an Augustinian house on an older early Christian monastic site in County Londonderry. It became closely associated with the O'Cahan family, local Gaelic lords whose elaborate tomb effigy was carved for its church. The priory served as a religious center for the territory before declining after the Reformation.
